Transition Program

The goal of the Transition Program is to provide students with disabilities the life skills and work experience so that they can lead productive, independent lives. This is accomplished through classroom instruction and on the job training. Businesses and agencies are able to support the Transition Program by offering their location as a training site. Below is a quick breakdown of what it means to be a training site:

1) A plan is discussed with the training site in regards to the type of work that business or agency performs. This allows the transition teacher to choose the appropriate student(s) for the training site.

2) Generally, 2-3 students show up to the work site for 3-5 hours, twice a week. The students are accompanied by an aid that assists with training and monitoring of student progress.

3) Some of the transition students have been in the program for a few years and have already learned skills to be independent. These students go to their training site alone but the transition teacher can always be contacted if problems arise.

4) Students that have proven to be independent and work ready are offered a Training Wage. This is a paid wage that is subsidized by the Sacramento City Unified School District. Students who receive this wage should be in a training site that has the intent of hiring the student after their training period is over. These students benefit by learning how to cash a paycheck, create a bank account and have an income. The business benefits by receiving a hirable candidate that has already been trained in the operations and procedures of their company.
